“Introduction to Robotics and Wearable Technology- Status, Impact and Challenges” - introductory session at GSIS
6th September, 2016

Keeping up with its commitment to serve the community, on 27th August, IITAAK organized the first session of this year for the students of Gyeonggi Suwon International School (GSIS).
The introductory session were held on two topics - “Introduction to Robotics” and “Wearable Technology - Status, Impact and Challenges” addressing the students of Robotics club and the students of the class Information Technology in a Global Society respectively.
The session on wearable technology was led by our members Ms. Nupur and Mr. Kunal. After introducing themselves to the kids, Ms. Nupur started the session with a video to give a glimpse of the potential of wearable tech. Then, she went on to introduce the concept of wearables, the different kinds of wearable in the market. To ensure a two-way interaction, students were called and asked to enlist the do’s and don’t’s of a good wearable on a board. The students were very enthusiastic on learning about the current and existing technologies, especially Augmented and Virtual Reality glasses. After students got an understanding about the field of wearable tech, the current status, usability and applications. Mr. Kunal discussed with them the social and personal impact of wearables, the various kinds of challenges they pose including but not limited to technical, ethical, security and health. The aim was to give the students an insight into the the promising field of wearable tech and the students as well as the teachers really appreciated hearing from a professional point of view.

The session on Robotics was led by Mr. Nishit and Mr. Gaurav, graduates from IIT Bombay who gave a glimpse of a very promising field called Robotics. Mr. Nishit started with the history of Robotics, the current trends and explained a few core technologies and provided insight into the functioning of the same. After seeing an average day in the life of a robotics specialist and what they do, the students were fascinated and kept asking very relevant questions.
Mr. Gaurav concluded the session by showing them how to build a simple robot from scratch. He explained them how to get their hands dirty and make a robot which was exciting for them.
The purpose of the talk was to ignite an interest in robotics in school kids by telling them about the recent advances in the field and the way forward for anyone interested in the field. Judging by the interest of students, this will be followed with a more hands-on session next time.
IIT Alumni Association Korea (IITAA-K) is looking forward to much such opportunities where its members can contribute to their local communities and create meaningful impact for themselves and people they serve. We thank GSIS especially Mr. Yong Jun, who helped us in conducting the sessions for extending this opportunity and supporting us all along and our volunteers for making all this possible.
