'Acquiring new skill' & 'Careers in Science and Engineering'- interaction with GSIS students
20th November, 2015

Taking forward its mission to contribute to the community, IIT Alumni Association Korea (IITAA-K) on Friday, 20th November 2015 organized a session with the young and enthusiastic students of the Mu Alpha Theta Club of Gyeonggi Suwon International School (GSIS). The session focussed on two topics - The Art of Acquiring New Skill and Careers in Science and Engineering and was marked by the presence of students from middle school as well as high school.
The session started with Mr. Prudhvi Tej, graduate in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay, sharing his insights on mastering anything. The talk started on an interactive note with the presenter asking the students about the various activities the students want to excel at and why they’re interested in acquiring those particular skills. Later on, he explained through his experiences the importance of deconstructing into parts and focusing on the most important parts first. He then detailed to students how practice and passion play the biggest role with the help of examples from accomplished individuals like Roger Federer and Bill Gates. It was an interesting take on learning new skills which kept the audience captivated.

Next, Ms. Nupur, Electrical Engineering graduate from IIT Delhi and Mr. Nishit , Computer Science Engineering graduate from IIT Bombay talked about careers in science and engineering. They started off with defining science and engineering and explaining the importance of these fields to the audience. The listeners were fascinated by the diversity of careers that one can pursue in these areas. The students particularly enjoyed the fun quiz in the beginning where they had to guess whether or not some of the famous personalities were engineers or scientists and were astonished to find engineers and scientists working in different walks of life. Additionally, the speakers briefly touched upon a typical day of engineers and scientists to shed some light on what to expect in these professions. This was followed by discussing the factors to be considered while deciding one’s major. This was exciting for the students as the speakers shared personal motivations and endeavours which helped them decide their own career paths.

Both of the sessions were received very enthusiastically by the students who could appreciate the importance of perseverance while trying to acquire a new skill and were amazed by the vastitude of ways in which science and engineering affect life. The exuberance of the presenters and the interactive nature of the session helped in retaining the attention of students and driving home the matter at hand. The speakers were pleasantly surprised to find the students excited for programming and tried to answer their queries as appropriately as possible. Overall, the session was successful in its aim of guiding the students on how to decide their major while making the most out of school life.
