IIT Women and Career10/11/2015 By Shubha Maudgal Mrs. Shubha Maudgal one of the senior most members in our Association talks about women and career narrating her story from the days as a student at IIT to where she is today. I got my MS in Chemistry from IIT Delhi in 1979 and was awarded the Director’s silver medal for standing first in my discipline. Throughout my education I held the National Science Talent Scholarship right up to my PhD, which I completed in 1983 from IIT Bombay. Subsequently, I worked for 15 years in the field I had trained in, namely high temperature resistant polymers. I worked at NASA, Langley Research Centre, USA; at Johnson & Johnson, Mumbai; at the Aeronautical Development Establishment (DRDO, Ministry of Defence), Bangalore and finally at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK where I helped create standards for the materials I had done my research on. I had 20+ publications in international journals, 2 US patents and several measurement notes to my credit.

By Nupur Kala
Nupur Kala, freshly minted graduate from IIT Delhi talks about her growing up in IIT through Social Service and mentorship. For most of us Jodha ji is an ordinary man, residing in a slum of Delhi and earning his living working as a security guard, he sounds exactly like the person we conveniently ignore. However, there is one thing that makes him special and that is his desire to make the slum he lives in a better place. In a locality where fights and crimes are a daily occurrence, his efforts in creating a healthy atmosphere especially for the kids, by organizing events to celebrate national holidays, facilitating the construction of a common temple, or making sure that a group of students could safely and conveniently teach the kids at the basti are nothing but commendable. Trust me when I say that the chance of getting to know people like him is one of the greatest perks of social work.

Diaries of AIR 129/9/2015 By Prudhvitej Inmadi Prudhvitej Immadi recently graduated from Electrical Engineering department of IIT Bombay and joined Samsung Electronics in Korea this September. He has something very unique that most of us at one point dreamed of, which is being All India Rank 1 (AIR 1 aka Ikki aka Hawa Ek etc) in IIT JEE. We asked him how this unique achievement affected him and how others treated him. Many funny anecdotes on the way! First thoughts It was the big-day and everyone knew well before the results that I was going to get a good rank but 1 definitely took me by surprise. I was pretty calm and wasn’t jumping my feet off the ground after the results. I distinctly remember my parents asking me why I wasn’t celebrating and I wasn’t because it didn’t sink in by then. It took quite some time, actually some days to sink in and understand what it means to be the topper. Media and their stories The media attention and the limelight were overwhelming to say the least. I was a naïve 16 year old, getting flooded by all the questions from the media persona and hence there were some very lame interviews of mine. Many of my friends still make fun of me whenever something comes up. I was a celebrity for some days but all is not done there. Media is media after all and there was suddenly a story in TOI that I was inspired from a character of a movie of my favorite actor. Thanks to TOI, I shared stage with him in the Audio release function of his next film. Though it gets embarrassing sometimes when I see the poster on face book that says “AIR-1 inspired from Pawan Kalyan”, it wasn’t a bad experience after all.

Stories from Four Corners of Korea26/8/2015 by Subhojit Chakladar
Subhojit Chakladar started as a student in Seoul National University soon after he graduated from IIT-Kharagpur and later joined Samsung Electronics which he continues to be a part of. He is a blogging enthusiast, a passionate bird photographer and conservationist. In this article he shares some of his interesting experiences while travelling in Korea. This week marks the completion of my 7th year in Korea. Back in 2008, when I first set foot here, I barely knew anything about it. My decision to come here was partly driven by the desire to explore a place I knew so little about.Over the years, the list of "places to visit" have shrunk and the list of "been to" places have swelled - so much so that sometimes when my Korean co-workers ask me where I've been on the weekend, I surprise them with a name they've never heard! During my university days, I was an active blogger for Korean Tourism. Partly in search of interesting stories, partly to learn the language and partly to get away from the hordes that descend upon popular tourist spots on the weekend, I sought out the path less traveled. These ventures have been rich harvesting ground for interesting experiences. Sharing 4 such stories from 4 corners of Korea.

Inside Indian Music13/8/2015 By Prajwal A N Prajwal A N, a recent graduate from IIT Bombay who has been working in Samsung for a close to year now, is a trained musician. In this post he shares his personal story and gives insights in to what makes music, music. I started learning Carnatic music when I was 12 years old. I trained for a while as a vocalist before I turned instrumentalist with the violin. What started as a small hobby soon turned into a mainstream activity. For a couple of years, I was training very seriously as a musician until I had to stop most of the extra-curricular activities to concentrate on preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination to the IITs. I did not pursue music seriously in those two years of junior college, but the training I went through by then helped me to still keep in touch with music and improve myself with minimal practice. I did take up music again after I joined IIT Bombay for my undergraduate studies, but could not give it enough time and train with the dedication I had during high school. I did try exploring different other forms of music and learnt to appreciate the differences between them and Carnatic music, which I learnt. Today I would like to share with you the basics of music and hopefully by the end of this post you would get an idea of what music is and how different styles differ.
